Taking a step back from the post “college-for-all” era

As we continue to meet with school districts across the Denver-metro area it is becoming increasingly clear that administrators, teachers, students, and families are all increasing their interest in skills-based pathways.  Through state, local, and industry funding, districts are investing tens of millions of dollars in expanding and updating their technical and skills-driven curriculums.  However, demand for hands-on classes linked to lucrative industry certifications, apprenticeships, and access to the latest technology is far outpacing supply.

As highlighted in Education Week’s “High School Handoff” series, more parents are recognizing the value of alternatives. With only 54% expressing a preference for traditional four-year colleges, it’s clear that many are seeking practical, skill-based education that can lead to fulfilling careers.

Gen Z students know they need post-secondary education to build a meaningful career, however fewer are considering college.  In a 2023 ECMC Group survey of high school students, 64% of students polled said that they intended to pursue post-secondary education, however only 52% responded that they were considering four-year college.

It's inspiring to see Colorado leading the way in skills-based learning through a collaborative effort between education and industry. Schools and districts are actively engaging students with career-exploration days, guest speakers, and hands-on opportunities in career and technical education. The growth of public-private partnerships is a testament to the recognition among industry leaders of the importance of building a talent pipeline early.

While this is good news for the entire workforce of Colorado, it is a particularly pivotal moment for our under-resourced high school students who often face significant barriers.   BPI is dedicated to empowering these young adults by helping them quickly gain the skills they need to secure financial independence and create a pathway to success.  Providing a debt-free education to our BPI Scholars is just one of many support services that these students need.  By giving grants to our non-profit community partners that provide critical wrap-around services, we can greatly increase the odds of thriving.

Colorado’s public and community college education systems are among this country’s leaders in investing in CTE, demonstrating a powerful commitment to equipping students with the skills they need for today's job market.   As demand continues to grow for skills-based trades and certifications, an expanding array of resources and opportunities will become available to all students.

Join us in making a profound impact on the lives of young people longing for quality education. Your support can transform futures! Whether through a donation to BPI, volunteering your time, or partnering with us as an education or non-profit ally, your involvement is vital. Together, we can empower those in need and build a brighter tomorrow. Let's take this journey together—every effort counts!
