More ways to give

There are many ways you can make a difference for Colorado's under-resourced students.

Donor Advised Funds

Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) have quickly become one of America’s most popular tools for charitable giving. DAFs are like your own private foundation without any of the administrative red tape. One of the simplest ways to give real estate, stocks, mutual funds, or commodities, DAFs offer an immediate tax deduction for the market value of your donation, but also allow you time to decide when you want to give.

If you have already established a DAF, you can begin the process of directing a grant to BPI by filling out the DAF Direct form. If you don't see your DAF listed or would like more information about using your DAF, please reach out to us at contact@bpicharity.org

Planned Giving

If you’re 70-1/2 or older, you can donate up to $105,000 per tax year directly from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to the Bates Philanthropic Initiative.

Because the gift goes directly to the charity without passing through your hands, the dollar amount of the gift may be excluded from your taxable income up to a maximum of $105,000 annually, with some exceptions.

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD), or IRA charitable rollovers, are a great way to support BPI.  Here’s how a QCD works:

  • You must be 70-1/2 or older at the time of gifting your IRA to charity.

  • You may distribute an amount, up to $105,000 in a calendar year, to one or more public charities, so long as it is completed by December 31 of that year.

  • Your IRA administrator must make the distribution directly to the charity, or you may write a check to the charity from your IRA checkbook. Funds that are withdrawn by you and then contributed do not qualify.

Benefits of making an IRA gift
QCDs count toward your required minimum distribution for the year. As an added benefit, you’ll avoid paying income tax on your gross income up to $105,000.

How to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution to BPI

  1. Contact your IRA administrator and instruct them to transfer funds to the Bates Philanthropic Initiative.

  2. Help us credit your gift by having your administrator include your name and address.

  3. Mail distribution check to:
